Clarabelles and Crows: Recapping a Jam-Packed Weekend @ The PlaySpace

Clarabelles and Crows: Recapping a Jam-Packed Weekend @ The PlaySpace

In our first weekend since the TCG department completely moved over to The PlaySpace @ Just Press Play Mega Store, we filled the room on Saturday and Sunday with two major local TCG Tournaments. Last Saturday, we ran our Pokémon TCG Perfect Order Win-A-Box, and last Sunday, we held our very first Lorcana Set Championship!

Kicking things off with my favorite game in the whole wide world, it’s always a pleasure to run a Pokémon Win-A-Box tournament! The tournament drew 20 people, and a wide variety of decks came to earn their spot on the leaderboard and walk away with an entire booster box of Perfect Order. Even though a majority of the room was playing current Meta-Staple Dragapult ex, the tournament was run by a sleeper pick, Team Rocket’s Honchkrow ex, by one of our regular Wednesday warriors, Damian P.

Damian only lost one round in the entire tournament, Round 1, against eventual 4th place finisher Thomas H., who played Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex. After that, Damian and the crows flew through a variety of meta and off-meta choices, including Empoleon, Mega Lucario, Decidueye, and a rematch against Thomas’s Mewtwo to send him into the finals.

Finally, Damian faced off in a narrow match against Stanley M,’s Dragapult ex / Blaziken ex, and ultimately came out on top. The top tables ended up looking pretty evil, as 3 out of the Top 4 decks ended up involving Team Rocket in some capacity. Check out the Top 4 decklists below and get some inspiration going into the new format!

Moving on to our very first Lorcana Set Championship, it was super cool to see so many new faces at JPP, and even cooler to give away the top prize, The Iconic Moana Card from Winterspell! The familiar and unfamiliar players brought their best decks to win the prize, and I saw a lot of Blurple, Dogs, and a little bit of Amber/Steel. But in the end, in a Team Rocket fashion, 3 out of the top 4 decks were all the same archetype, Emerald/Sapphire. Our second place and third place players, Patrick S. and Kris B., actually played the same exact list! The odd man out in Top 4, Stanley M., was piloting Ruby/Amethyst. Playing until the sun went down, the finals in our Set Champs were a down-to-the-wire Emerald/Sapphire mirror match, where Will X. ultimately took down Patrick S. Without a doubt, this were some of the most skill-expressive Lorcana games I’ve ever witnessed, and I look forward to running more of these events in the future!

A quick special shoutout to Stanley M., as he was the same Stanley that was our Pokemon Win-A-Box runner-up! It’s impressive enough to make top cut at one event, but to make top 4 in back-to-back events in separate games, AND at his age???? Stanley, you’re our hero.

Take a look at our Top 4 (or 3, technically) decks from the event below:

And there you have it! A wonderful weekend recapped at the new-and-improved PlaySpace, where some serious prizes were given out! If you missed your chance at these prizes and want to get in on the action next time, check out the event calendar on our website, follow our social medias, and check out the bulletin board in the PlaySpace!
